A geometry estimate. Real loads depend on load securement, axle weights, product fragility and your carrier's rules.
Two different questions
Loaded pallets are limited by floor spots and weight. A 48x40 pallet loaded with the 48-inch side along the trailer takes more length than one turned sideways, which is why the turned count is higher.
Empty pallets are stacked, so the count depends on stack height and how the loader builds the stacks. Read the full guide: how many pallets fit on a truck.
